Sassafras

I ahve several sassafras trees bordering my woods--trees I hadn't seen since I
was a kid. I love the fall color and the scent of the leaves and bark. I had
to limb some up and the cut branches in the shredder were marvelous--really
made my day.

But now I wonder if there is another odd effect of El Nino or if this is more
common than I thought: I have noticed this season that most of the leaves are
plain ovals--very few show any of the lobe variations typical on sassafras
trees. Has anyone else noticed this? In the eight years I've lived here I
think I have typically seen more variation in the leaves than this year. Or
maybe they are just stressed like all the other trees in this SW Ohio area
where we have had drought conditions for three summers in a row.

(For those not familiar with the sassafras tree, it usually bears 3 very
different leaf shapes.)
