Have you checked out the International Clematis Society web site?
http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/clematis/index.htm
I haven't done a search for this one, but they do have a questions and
feedback section and may be able to help you.
The species should be hardy for you. It is hardy in Washington DC, but
marginal outside the city where I am (USDA z. 7). I have not grown it, but
that is feedback I've gotten from local landscapers.
Here are a couple more links for clematis fans....photos to drool over,
etc.

Graham Leatherbarrow's site, Graham's Paradise Garden, also has grand
photos plus growing and pruning info...and the same for other plants he
grows. He's a very nice person and may very well be able to help you out,
too. Email him from his site.
