Re: Dawn redwood

By the (more or less rhomboid) structures you call segments you (most probably) mean the cone scales of

dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides, see http://maven.smith.edu/~phyllo/OldFiles/Pictures/metasequoia.html ), because the actual seeds on between are tiny (~1000 seeds only weigh ~2gr, see http://www.semencesdupuy.com/1F906-Metasequoia-Glyptostroboides.html or http://www.nsl.fs.fed.us/wpsm/Metasequoia_glytostroboides.jpg) and should, by now, long have flown out (for more information, see also http://digitalis.mobot.org/mrsid/313/31300021_001.gif).

Why not give it a try next fall (when cones start to open); but note: If your tree is the only one around, viability may be low.

Could someone tell me if the whole segments in a dawn redwood are the true
seeds or were they between the segments? They do look like the cypress which
are true seeds. I have cones down and wonder if I will be able to get more of
this tree.
