Hi,
If you get some seed make sure to plant a good number of them. In my
experience the seeds usually germinate in low percentages and seedlings are
prone to damping off. I have read that this is likely due to the inbreeding
of the limited genetic diversity of plants in North America. I know of
several commercial sources of seed if you would like to know I can send you
their address.

Yes, I was afraid the seeds were gone. There is a huge tree on the
college campus just over a mile away from my tree. I did find one
seedling and had hoped for more. Thanks for the information.

By the (more or less rhomboid) structures you call segments you (most
probably) mean the cone scales of
dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides, see
http://maven.smith.edu/~phyllo/OldFiles/Pictures/metasequoia.html ),
because the actual seeds on between are tiny (~1000 seeds only weigh
~2gr, see
http://www.semencesdupuy.com/1F906-Metasequoia-Glyptostroboides.html or
http://www.nsl.fs.fed.us/wpsm/Metasequoia_glytostroboides.jpg) and
should, by now, long have flown out (for more information, see also
http://digitalis.mobot.org/mrsid/313/31300021_001.gif).
Why not give it a try next fall (when cones start to open); but note: If
your tree is the only one around, viability may be low.

Could someone tell me if the whole segments in a dawn redwood are the
true
seeds or were they between the segments? They do look like the cypress
which
are true seeds. I have cones down and wonder if I will be able to get
more of
this tree.
