Re: Erica

I have a 40-year-old (west-facing) erica bed planted in an area of the
border that never receives any water except rainfall.  We live in the
Northwest, east of the Willamette Valley which has a dry climate in the
summer as a rule.  Some summers we get rain occasionally, but in 1972 it
didn't rain from June  through November and then turned to -12 F. for 8
days.  All very strange, some trees and shrubs died, but the heather blooms
on every winter and spring regardless of drought or cold.  Two plants of
the same variety have survived in almost pure sand on a sunny, even more
arid, south-facing bank, holding forth among the tough competition of an
elderly and prolific bed of St. Johnswort.  My folks planted these ericas,
a lavender variety, in the mid-fifties.
