RE: Viburnums experiences please.

Hi Susan and all,
I agree with your choices wholeheartedly except for the V. tinus 'Spring
Bouquet'. Although I have admired this in other locations -the John J.
Innskeep Environmental Learning Center on the campus of Clackamas College
has a superb huge specimen at the entrance gate that is sooooooooooo
fragrant starting about now and well into spring. But for me, growing in
part shade, it was plagued with mildew which ruined the leaves and the
flowers. I finally pulled it out in frustration - one shouldn't have to
spray their shrubs for mildew! So my suggestion would be to grow it in full
sun. All my other Viburnums grow, flower and set berries very nicely in
part shade without mildew or any other disease problems.
By the way my Viburnum bodnatense 'Pink Dawn' has been in bloom since
November with nice fat clusters of very fragrant pink flowers. It often
continues to bloom well into the spring after the new leaves have emerged.
One caveat, to me the foliage really stinks, so I planted it well away from
the house but in a spot where I can see it from indoors :). This is a good
sturdy shrub that supports a huge Clematis 'Mrs. Robert Brydon' that blooms
August-September with a zillion small pale blue flowers and looks like the
Viburnum is in bloom again. The combination gives us about 5 months of
flowers during the year.

Viburnums; one of my very favorite plant families!

The first Viburnum I grew is V. opulus compactum. I fell in love with the
pictures of the full sized one, but knew I really didn't have room for
that... famous last words.

A new v's for me is v. tinus 'Spring Bouquet.' It is growing, slowing,
under a very large tree, in more than part shade, but it is growing. I
can't comment on the leaves and only remember the flowers were white. Can't
remember if they were fragrant or not and I have not gotten the blue/black
berries yet either. I think it will be a nice shrub, once established.
