Re: hydrangea quercifolia


I also live in zone 5.  My understanding is that the oak leaf
hydrangea will survive in zone 5 but in severe winters it will
lose the flower buds.  Mine is about 4 years old and is blooming
right now , but we had a mild winter and I make a contraption for
it.  I put about two inches of hay between 2 lenghts of chicken
wire and then wrap it around the plant for insulation.  The peegee
hydrangeas are the most reliable bloomers for zone 5

Mine have been blooming for a week or two.  Hydrangea radiata (
arborescens radiata)
and H. arborescens just started.

One H. paniculata (Burgundy Lace) is sn't too far off.  Most of
these will bloom much
later.

I can't really do H. macrophylla here in z5 New Hampshire.
