You don't say where you live, so I don't know whether my suggestion will
be hardy for you.

I have Skimmia japonica by my front door against a wall and shaded by tall
bamboo.  It is low, evergreen, and always looks good.  You need a male and
a female to get berries.  The berries are bright red and last a very long
time.  Last year's berries are still on mine, and this year's berries are
full-sized and will colour soon.  The flower buds are dark red and provide
more colour during the winter.  When they flower in the spring, the whole
area is perfumed.

One of our nurseries offered a white-berried form last year.
