Re: yuccas (revisited)

I just learned something about yuccas.

Carefully open up and unopened bud. At the top of the fuzzy stamens should
be two anthers. Once those open up (and they seem to open relatively
early), the pollen sheds. That means that the flowers may be largely
self-pollinated. If they are self-compatible (i.e., if self-pollen will
fertilize that same plant).

That makes it a little trickier. You need to remove the anthers BEFORE
they open and shed pollen in order to make controlled crosses. Open up an
unopened bud. Remove the anthers, remove the petals, and label the flower.
Then cover it back up with a paper sack.

As a bud opens, it will probably still have good anthers available. Make
the pollen transfer at this time, onto a stigma with reflexed surfaces.

I'll try to make some hand-selfs on my plants, just to get the timing down.
