Thanks Marge for all your suggestions. I was wondering if the Ilex opaca
is the same as winterberry? That certainly would be a nice possibility.
I was thinking of the clethra; I think I want something a little taller
than the Itea (I do have one of those and I really like it). I do have a
Hydrangea quercifolia which is growing in a different spot and is covered
with blooms this year. The area in question is subjected to the winter
winds so that whatever I put there has to tolerate the dry shade as well
as the winter winds. Is there a common name for Mahonia? I will look
that up in Dirr (book is home-I am at work).
On a slighly different note-has anyone grown the new pink potentilla.
Anyone know how hardy it is and what its growing characteristics are. I
have a white, a pale yellow and a yellow one. Wayside carries the pink
one. I saw one in England several years ago and would like to get one.
Thanks,
Denise Leonard
