Re: woodyplants DIGEST V1 #175

Picea likiangensis (Franch.) Pritz. [likiang spruce] is the correct name.
Since you call it "purple spruce" you may have P. l. var. purpurea
[purplecone spruce].
They are native to the mountains of western China, elev. 3,000 to 4,000 m.;
introduced by E.H. Wilson ["Chinese Wilson"], who collected in Asia around
the turn of the century for the Arnold Arboretum, USA, and Veitch nurseries,
UK. Said to be of Zone V hardiness. Grown in a number of collections.
Lit.refs.: DenOuden & Boom, Manual of Cultivated Conifers; Rehder, Manual of
Cult. trees & Shrubs.
