RE: Euonymus alatus

My experience with 'burning bush' has been that in drought years where
Aug. and Sept have been exceptionally dry the plants have hardly any
color at all. Vibrancy has been a factor of both temperature and
moisture conditions. Shady exposures would also have a negative effect
on them.

My friend has some Euonymus alatus 'Compactus', Dwarf-winged Euonymus,
that
show no autumn color.

These "burning bushes" are supposed to be among the most reliable of all
plants for fall color, even in dense shade. Hers get 2-3 hours of
direct sun
daily, but are in open shade the rest of the time. They seem to be
quite
healthy.

They are in a rather protected place near the house. Sometimes plants
need a
shock of cold to turn colors. Could that be the problem?

Does anyone on the list know of other winged-euonymus that do not turn
red in
the fall? Any advice? Your help will be appreciated! --Janis
