Aucuba japonica

Thanks to Janis and Don Martinson for your very helpful comments about my
golden-leaved Aucuba japonica. And my apologies for not having examined
more thoroughly my brand-new Dirr's encyclopedia. I bought it by mail from
the American Horticultural Society. Their publicity did give both title and
subtitle, but didn't mention that Dirr says in his preface that it is
designed for zones 6 and colder. I'm at the edge of zone 6c, and I guess
I'm just lucky never to have lost an aucuba.

I particularly like Don's suggestion that I try rooting cuttings before
attempting my neighbor's rather drastic proposal (to cut off all stems with
green leaves). I wonder if aucubas are, like a good many plants, untested
in more northern climes. Hortus 3, which I've now consulted thanks to Don's
suggestion, says aucubas are for zone 8! I wonder how far up in zone 6 they
survive, and does anyone in zone 5 have one?

Harry Dewey, Beltsville, Maryland, zone 6c
