Hi Rob,
There's a 5 degree difference between 6b and 7a.....6b is -5 to 0F and 7a
is 0 to 5F. I was teasing Harry (as he, no doubt, knows - right Harry?) as
there isn't a 6c on any of the USDA hardiness maps. They don't have a
plain old 6 and 7 anymore...ya' gotta go with the 'a's and 'b's:-)
Here's the URL to the USDA zone map site...this is the map. Site also has
info. on how the map was done.

According to the fading copy (their colors really are not permanent!) I
have on my wall, you are definitely in zone 7a. I could be 7a or 6b, but
do believe, based on what survives here, that it is more 7a.
Micro climate in your particular garden can put you a zone above or below
what the map says you are...and same can happen in different spots in your
garden. Plus, this is based on averages. I cannot recall, in nearly 25
years in this garden, ever having the temps go to 0F. The coldest I
remember is 5F, which is pretty cold. Lowest lows are generally in the
teens. But, it can happen and probably does on more exposed sites than
mine. You are closer to the Bay and this will affect the temperatures in
your garden....should be milder.
