Dear list people --
Thought you might be interested in the following item I received today about
a new
pheromone trap for the Asian long-horned beetle. This could be very good
news to some of you.
Last fall I discovered lilac borer holes in one of my lilacs. I cut off the
damaged limb immediately, then put out a pheromone trap this spring and again
in June. I caught lots of borers and had no new damage this year, so I was
very pleased with the results. I had felt I might be taking a risk since
some folks believe that pheromone traps are useful for monitoring but that
they serve to attract additional pests and are therefore not effective as a
control measure. In my limited experience they were very effective. Does
anyone else have experiences to share?

LOVE IN THE AIR:
U.S. Department of Agriculture researchers have come up with a
chemical compound designed to help fight infestations of the tree-eating
Asian long-horned beetle. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said the
compound is a synthetic form of beetle pheromone that attracts both
males and females, and could be used to bait traps.
