Amelachier fruit

Last week I was walking across the Rutgers campus where I work, when I
came across a colleague who was harvesting ripe fruit from an
Amelanchier shrub. He told me he freezes the blueberry-sized fruit and
uses them in breads and cobblers. He offered me a couple to try. They
were quite tasty, very sweet. I have grown Amelanchier in my yard in
Illinois when I lived there. Up to now I had never heard about eating
the fruit. Does anyone out there harvest Amelanchier fruit?
