Title: Re: Dirca palustris transplantability? I love my Dirca palustris, although it is only about 4 ft tall - especially the subtle blooms in the early spring. Unfortunately, can't help with any moving advice since I only moved it once when it was very small.
I guess if I were in your situation, I'd definitely wait until fall or spring, but I'm wondering, is the difficultly in transplanting due to a tap root? Otherwise, since you're only moving it OVER by about 3 ft, perhaps you could consider simply moving a block of soil containing the root ball laterally to its new position, without actually lifting the shrub from the ground. I realize that your particular situation (particularly the size) might not allow for such a strategy, but just a thought. Perhaps a successful venture could be featured on The History Channel’s Mega Movers. Alternatively, you could always go for Engineering Disasters.
