Well, I have good news and bad news about spamming and these email lists.
The good news is that our recent changes to the perennials configuration
(only allowing postings from known addresses of subscribers) have kept
out one spamming message.
The bad news is that the woodyplants list was not set up this way -- I
wanted to run the perennials list this way for a few weeks to make
sure. So to those of you on the woodyplants list, I apologize for the
spammed message that you got, and I will institute the new anti-spam
changes.
The spammer in question has been disallowed access to our mail servers.
There is more bad news, however. It seems that the spammer is probably
a subscriber to these lists. Interestingly enough, they sent the message
once at 5:30 to perennials AND woodyplants. The message went out to
woodyplants, but bounced when sent to perennials. Then the message
was resent at 6:30 to perennials, then at 8:30. At that point I turned
off access from the offending email address. How would this individual
know to send the message again to perennials, but not to woodyplants
unless they were a subscriber?
Chris
