RE: Prairie Crabapple

Dear Rob:

I have grown Malus ioensis 'Prairie Rose' for several years. It is a
double flowered form. Seedlings will almost certainly have single flowers.
This species is fully hardy here in Zone 4. It has large soft pink
fragrant flowers which appear after all other crabapples are finished.
Although I have heard that it is prone to certain apple diseases, I have
had no significant problems. I really like this crabapple and have planted
another one in 1999. Seed will need 3 months cold moist treatment (in a
plastic bag in the refrigerator with some moist peat) in order to
germinate. Alternatively, plant in pots and leave outside over winter.

I am considering starting some Prairie Crabapple (Malus ioensis) from seed.
Does anyone have any experience with this plant. The final site would be a
natural area although we are considering starting them in a nursery
setting.
