Hi Donna,

   Kind of changing gears on you here, but have you considered growing
   some of your evergreens in Ikada (raft) style?

   It's a traditional bonsai technique where a tree is stripped of 
   branches on one side and planted with the trunk horizonal 
   in the soil.  The other side of the tree sticks out, forming a 
   'grove' of many small trees.  In reality, it's all just one 
   tree and the mini trees are just branches.

   Do a google images search for 'bonsai AND ikada' and you'll see
   what I mean...

   OK, back to your original question...  When you say max 3 ft. with
   pruning, are we talking about an occasional shaping, or full-blown
   training like bonsai and saikei?
