Chris,
Where did you find that? I use the RHS site at
http://www.rhs.org.uk/databases/summary.asp
There, RHS says the correct species name is oshimensis. I've included the
full entry below.
Carex (Cyperaceae)
'Evergold' synonym of Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' (v) AGM
hachijoensis 'Evergold' synonym of Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' (v) AGM
morrowii 'Evergold' synonym of Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' (v) AGM
oshimensis 'Everbrite' (v) synonym of Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' (v) AGM
oshimensis 'Evergold' (v) AGM
oshimensis 'Evergold Compact' tentatively accepted name
oshimensis 'Honeybird' synonym of Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' (v) AGM
Beyond that I checked the RHS Index at home and it also says C. oshimensis
and does not mention hachijoensis at all. C. morrowii is listed, but the
only cultivar listed is C.m. 'Variegata'.
So I checked my 2004 edition of AHS A-Z, and wouldn't you know it, they side
with C. hachijoensis with C.oshimensis as the synonym. But they, too, rule
out C. morrowii. I pulled out Jelitto an Schacht for a European perspective.
They wrote:
"Carex hachijoensis - Evergreen, tufted plant, similar to C. morrowii, but
with narrower, softer leaves. The form, 'Evergold', is a very good
evergreen...."
My copy of J&S is the '95 edition, but I don't know if they updated the
names from the original 50s book. But it seems they were making a point
that it's not a morrowii cultivar.
I, too, usually opt for the RHS preference (Carex oshimensis 'Evergold') for
the same reasons you stated, but I can't find any preference by anyone for
it being morrowii.
Please fill me in if I should be looking somewhere else.
Kitty
