Ilex decidua planting

Title: Ilex decidua planting
I just purchased a pair (male/female) of Ilex decidua ‘Warren’s Red.  Is there any compelling reason why I could not plant them together, resulting in what would essentially be a double stemmed shrub? I realize the downside of this would be that only the female side would bear fruit.  If I plant them separately, how far would I be able to separate them, yet obtain sufficient pollination for good fruit set?
