I've never actually watched one grow over time, so I can't honestly
say how fast they are.  There's one on campus here that I can take
a look at to see how much growth there's been in the past.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say somewhere around 4-6"/year.  I
checked all of my reference books to see if anybody else has anything
to say about them, but there's no indication of actual growth rate.  The
closest anybody came was Dirr, who said something like "patience is
a virtue."

Regarding exfoliation, Krussmann says that it doesn't appear until the
plant has a 10 cm caliper (4"), but I really think that I've seen smaller
ones do it earlier.
