weeping cherry

I have a lovely weeping Higan cherry, top grafted onto a trunk. The trunk
has several big splits in the bark which has persisted a couple of years.
Is there anything I can do about this? Will it harm the tree? So far the
tree seems to be doing okay.

Also, any hints on preventing suckering, both from the roots and from the
trunk?
