Tree identification

While weeding my beds this weekend, I came across what I think is some kind
of tree. The leaves are oval and lightly serrated. They remind me of an
elm or maybe birch leaf. When I pulled it, it is growing from a nut that is
about 1.5 inches in diameter and dark brown with a very smooth surface.
Any idea what kind it could be? If it is something desirable, I'll find
some place to put it, it's in a pot right now.
