Doug, I posted your message to a Habitat Stewards list, and got
a 3 different answers...Sounds like an interesting behavior to observe!
Lynn
Sounds like it might be the Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) going
after ants and other insects.

Could it be a Ring necked dove? I haven't seen that behavior in
Florida, but
the ring necks are so bick that wherever they land they knock something
off.
Are you in an area that has been troubled by brush fires in the
recent
past? Perhaps it is a type of bird that has wandered off course because
of all of
the strange weather paterns in the US lately. The birds in Florida
are
acting just as strange. This year I have seen birds that I have never
seen before
and had to consult several books before I felt comfortable identifying
it
correctly.
Good luck with the birds. Maybe they are in co-hoots with the squirrels
out
there. : )

Sounds like band-tailed pigeons to me, and they are probably eating
acorns in the trees. I'd suggest the person contact their local office
of CA Fish & Game, or try this web address http://www.dfg.ca.gov/ .

Here in Pasadena, California, it's the time of the year when acorns,

the Oak trees which line our streets, are falling like rain, from

works the trees, causing the prodigious downfall.
Has anyone seen this phenomenon? Do you know the species of bird and
what
they are after in the trees? The activity of the birds seems
directed at
making the acorns fall, but they never seem to retrieve them.
