I leave them for the squirrels. I don't particularly like the flavor of black
walnuts anyway.
But I've heard of people who put them in burlap bags on their driveway and
drive the car back and forth over them. But I think that would break them up too
much.
Someone else told me once to dry them in a single layer in the attic and then
tap with a hammer to open.
