I have some spireas. I really like the Anthony Waterer and the Cocinnea
(not sure of the spelling). They are both very similar-about 4 feet tall
and dark pink to red flowers in a main flush the end of June with some
recurrance all summer. I have had a Princess spirea which as a shrub had
a nice shape but it bloomed all in one week and then didn't look very
nice to me! I donated it to a local shelter for their plantings! I also
have Gold Flame which has nice foliage but the floweres again are not
that spectacular. A light pink color and they go by quickly. But the
foliage is nice so this one will stay. I have all mine growing in full
sun and they are doind well. Seem to tolorate drier conditions.
Clethra will bloom in shade and I do have three palnts-one in full sun,
on inpart shade and the other in full shade. All three bloom and look nice.
Virginia Sweet Spire is imilar to clethra in flowere but blooms earlier
and will supposedly do OK in shade. Mine gets sun in the morning and is
in shade from 1:30 pm on.
I was told that duetzia will do OK is some shade . I have one growing in
full sun and one in half day sun.
Green leaved barberries will grow in the woods!! You need to find the
older variety, not nay of the newer hybrids. Mine self seed and I find
them all through the woods.
Although I have only addressed one of the species you mentioned hopefully
mention of the others will help. I live in zone 5.
