Hi Julia, I cannot help you get rid of them. I have tried for neigh on
nine years now and we have almost a solid acre. I have carefully dug
each little bit of stem and root ond stringer down below 18" and still
they come. They grow spore heads in the early spring and we even go out
and mow them down or beat on them with a shovel or stick, whatever is
handy when we notice them coming along but so far to no avail. It is a
very old plant and it sure shows why. If ever you find a way, you will
make a fortune. I have been told that if I cut the tails and soak in
water until they disintegrate, then strain, pour the tea over the garden
I will have a very fertile booster for my plants and I think that worked
just fine. It is a smelly process, similar to green manure tea, maybe a
bit worse.
Best I can suggest is cut the spore heads then cut the plants and cut
and weed out, if you let them go they will choke out everything
eventually. Keep the debris from your compost pile. Every little bit
will grow. Marg
