Yes, Mary, courage is needed! Someone else posted about success in cutting
branches part way. Just want to note that if the branches are young, this
works well, it's the really old wood where I've found the branches just die
off. 'Course, different species may react differently...and I'd be willing
to bet climate may have an influence. But, your climate is somewhat
similar to mine, so figure plants may react the same for you as for me.
Also wanted to note that I'd delay this pruning until next season...it's
really too late in the year IMO to give a Rhodie a haircut. Pruning
generally results in new growth and it's too late for that. If 'twere I,
I'd wait until immediately after bloom to give a severe pruning, or at
least early spring. That seems to be when Rhodies put on their growth
surge...
