conifer variety

Partly (well, mostly) out of pity, I purchased this small conifer from my barber, who is retiring.

I think this is the type commonly found in many of the discount stores around Christmas that come pre-decorated.

Does anyone know what variety this is? I have heard anecdotally that it is a southern variety and would not be hardy north.

Any suggestions?
