I don't know what part of Maine you are in, but Carol Mackie has
been very hardy for me in Z5. I often see them in Z4, which is the
zone they are rated for. I suspect that your earlier problems may have
been more related to drainage than mere cold. In a site with good light,
good soil and air drainage, and some protection from wind, you should be
fine.
I never protect mine.
