Laura,
I'd wait (and spray them with dessicants if you're worried about them.) I'd
probably dose them with a nice mulch, too, if I lived someplace like your solid
zone 5.
The problem I have with cutting shrubs back at this time of year is that they
tend to die back from the cut .... much more than they might have if I make that
same cut in late spring. That doesn't make much difference with zone 5
buddlieas, except that I'm afraid that the retreat might extend into the root
zone.

Hi!
What does everyone do with their butterfly bush? Cut back now, or wait. I'm
in zone 5. It is located in a very windy place, especially when we start
having N'oresters! (Oh, I can't bear the thought!) The plants are new this
year, but have grown unbelievably.....about 5' high and 3' across.
TIA
Laura
