I guess the debate has begun. I have read that fertilizing woody plants
with nitrogen in the autumn *after* they have gone dormant is a good
thing. The claim is that the roots are still active and absorbing
nutrients and storing food, which will be available in spring and give
the plants an extremely good start.
And after above-ground growth has ceased, there is little or no danger
of provoking soft, late growth.
That's the theory, as I understand it anyway.
