Apple rootstocks or Crabapples

Some years ago (about 15), I planted some "dwarf" and "semidwarf" apples
(cheap ones from Walmart)... in one the rootstock sprouted and overgrew the
graft (the grafted later part died a year or so later). This rootstock
proceeded to grow over time to about 20 feet or so and bloomed and fruited.
It was quite vigorous and bloomed even earlier the the Bradford pears in
the area, totally covering itself in white blooms and later tiny (about
marble sized or less), russet crabapples with minimal flavor. People
driving by would stop to look when it was in bloom. It's one serious
landscape problem was surface roots that frequently sprouted.

Totally immune to fireblight (a pear about 20 feet away was later killed by
fireblight) and no noticable disease problems despite total neglect. The
house was sold and the new owners cut it down (even though the neighbors
protested). What kind of rootstock could it be?

I'm thinking of buying some rootstock and planting, even with the root
suckering problem, as I've never seen crabapples with so few disease
problems and such vigor and tremendous bloom.

Suggestions?

Thanks.
