RE: Buckeye seeds


The trick is to start with fresh seed--no more than 2 days out of the shell.  I plant my buckeyes in 2 x 10" root trainer tubes in a fast draining, organic potting mix.  I then overwinter these tubes by burying them in my bark mulch pile.  I dig them out in the spring, put them in a shady corner of the nursery and forget about them until mid summer when they start to push out top growth.  At the end of the first growing season I upcan them to 2 gallon pots.  Over the years I've averaged 95% germination rates using this method.
