Perhaps is is referring to the cross between Obovatus and Coggrygia?

I can't find any mention of species other than the two in Hortus.  The
Index of Garden Plants, Krussmann, and Rehder all agree that there are
only two known species of Cotinus.

You've piqued my interest -- I wonder what species it really is.  Is there
a photograph available anywhere?
