11 April, 2004 gallery additions

I almost didn't get this week's listings out! But better late than never, right?

I'm including a lot of stuff from a trip to Bernheim last spring and some pics from my yard.

There are also a couple of new features in the gallery. The first is a link to the UIPLANTS project (that I'm part of)for certain plants. For example, if you click on Aesculus glabra in this week's update, you'll see a link to Aesculus glabra at UIPLANTS on the bottom of the page.

The second feature is one that I added two weeks ago, but I may end up removing it. There is now a list of the top 50 rated photos in the gallery at

    http://www.hort.net/gallery/top50/

However, I've noticed that people are abusing the voting system by putting in lower votes for photos by one photographer and higher votes for photos by another photographer in an attempt to change rankings. I appreciate the support that folks have for their favorite photographers, but by using the system in this way the whole purpose of image ranking is rendered useless.

I'm not sure what to do about it right now other than disabling the Top 50 listing, although a long-term solution might be to only allow registered users to vote, removing all votes by a user if this pattern is automatically detected, etc. For now, I'm going to manually remove votes that obviously follow this pattern. If anyone has any other solutions on how to deal with this situation, I'd be happy to hear them!

Another funny thing that I've noticed is that some people vote multiple times for the same images, often with different values. I've seen people give an image a '5' on one day and a '2' a week later. I don't think it's intentional, but it is kind of funny. I'm also writing a script to go through and remove these duplicates.

For those of you wondering, the votes are used to figure which photos need to be replaced and to figure out which photos should be displayed first when there are multiples for the same feature. For example, if there are two flower photos in the database, the first one displayed will be the one with the higher ranking.

On a more cheerful note, I also wanted to thank all of you who have contributed to the hort.net fund drive. We're not there yet, but we're making progress! For those of you who missed it, there's more information about the fund-raising process and options at

    http://www.hort.net/funds/

We've already started making changes for the better at hort.net, including plans to double our network speed (at less than we're paying now), getting a good backup plan in place (with more disk storage), and setting up user options on the site. In fact, I'm just about to place the order for part of the main file server that will allow us to put over a terabyte of disk space for the gallery and mailing list archives. And hopefully you'll be able to upload your own images directly to the gallery any day now! Any donations that you send will definitely be used and are appreciated.

Finally, I'd like to say enjoy the warm weather! I'm looking forward to getting some great shots of the plants in my yard this spring.
