RE: Iris runthenic

Jim,
I have both Iris ruthenica 'Gamlin Blue' and 'Red Form' growing here in Boise, Idaho. I have had very reliable bloom with the 'Red Form' but have had to try more than one plant on 'Gamlin Blue'.  Both plants I got from
Joe Pye Weed's Garden.  This year 'Gamlin Blue' seems to have adjusted to being here and joined the bloom season but at a different bloom time than the 'Red Form.  Dates I have for the start of  bloom for both are
04 12 2010 for the 'Red Form' and 05 01 2010 on 'Gamlin Blue'.  As you can see it is a span of time between the two forms as far as the bloom here in Idaho. We had a number of frost days during this time period this year for both but they did bloom.   Both plants are planted on the west side of the house with dappled sunlight.  The tree in this area is not fully leafed out at their bloom time.  This area that I planted is mostly for their protection during our very hot dry summers.  This is a semi-arid high desert region.  And since they have adapted to this spot I do not plan to move them. I do not have 'Royal Miniature'.

Have you tried Iris runthenica 'Gamlin Blue' from Joe Pay Weed's Garden? I tried to grow it in my climate, after the first year it would just sit with a few millimeters of leaf tips showing. I assume it was waiting for a winter that never came. It eventually gave up and died. "Red Form" grows very well for me and "Royal Miniature" is also doing well. I have an I. uniflora which did well for a while, but is now in a steep decline. There is just one fan left on one clump.

I have tried to grow many different Iris runthenic over the years. It starts into growth early and we usually get down into the teens again. That hurts it so badly in never recovers and is dead by summer. As Tony Avent of Plant Delights says, I believe every plant is hardy until I have killed it at least four times myself.
