Planting medium for Aroids

Hello to all,
I have noticed that in all of the Aroid I photograpghs, as well as in
everyone's home page photographs, that most (if not all) of the Aroids are
planted in a medium which looks like vermiculite. Can someone tell me if this
a special medium mix to be used rather than soil, and what would be an
approiate feeding program for Aroids in this medium?
