Friends:
I've started to use glass vivariums to grow my aroids indoors, with LED grow lights, and many of them seem to be thriving in these conditions. However, of course, I keep getting more plants, and I'm running out of room. So I want to gradually move some of my philodendrons out of the vivariums to places in my apartment that are just going to get whatever humidity is in the air. These plants will no longer be under lights - they'll be relatively close to windows with sunlight that comes through window blinds for part of the day.
I already have certain aroids that are doing well under the conditions I want to move my vivarium plants to - for example, I have several variegated pink-white-green-gold colored aglaonemas that are doing just fine. Interestingly, my philodendron lynamii is doing OK under these conditions - I had thought it was going to be finicky and need lots of humidity, but it keeps putting out new leaves without me adding any humidity to my apartment air.
Here's the philodendrons I'm considering moving out of the vivariums:
philodendron sodiroi
philodendron mamei "silver"
philodendron hastatum
philodendron brandtianum
I'd be interested which of these could best adapt to lower humidity and relatively lower light conditions - of course, I'd like do some hardening off before moving them out of the vivariums for good.
Finally, I live in the Los Angeles area - I'm about five miles inland from the beach - so we don't get the scorching heat and dryness of places like the San Fernando Valley - but it's not like I'm right near the beach either.
thanks in advance!
Roz, in Los Angeles
