Dear Les;
The plant you have may well be Medinilla and probably M. magnifica.
A beautiful shrubby member of the Melastomaceae with thick lustrous foliage
and an inflorescence as you describe. It requires lush, warm, moist,
tropical (in the most restricted sense) treatment. If you make it happy, it
will do likewise, but Good luck.
