The way the new leaf comes out is different from the climbers. It looks like the way the thaumatophyllum sprucii (SIC?) and the way the old wilsonii leaves come out. That is what I meant by delivered, you can laugh. It is ok! I am a horticulturist with absolutely NO scientific training.

Jill,
What do you mean "delivered"?

The leaves are delivered the way a thaumatophyllum delivers so I don’t understand why it is still a philodendron. Guys please help us out here!!

Mine looks really good and has grown 2 new leaves. But there was no clarification from the scientists here about whether or not it was the “real” thing.

Hi Jill,
Did you ever end up with any clarification here? Curious because I just received a PSS seedling from ecuagenera a few days ago that I had ordered back before you started this email thread. Mine looks like a PSS to me, but it’s not very healthy & I have emailed them about it. I don’t know if it had a pest problem (don’t see any on the plant now at any rate) or if it’s fungal but treating for fungal just in case.
Anyhoo, just curious on how this landed since we seem to have got the same thing from the same source at the same time!
Thanks :) Jess

Tom is the plant in the photo a real one though juvenile? Also, what makes it not a thaumatophyllum? Thanks so much! It sounds like kind of a mess actually.

Dear Jill: There are probably several species, all of which were all called informally Philodendron santa leopoldina. I think that after Bunting described Philodendron espirtus-sanctae the remainder were essentially ignored but I think that at least one of these has been formally recognized. God only knows if any of these things are left in the wild. I had thought that Philodendron 'Santa Leopoldina' was something different, but this article from Aroideana suggests they are the same. Santa Leopoldina, and with the change in name of so many non-climbing philos, what is this called now? Sorry if it is a dumb question. I got a seedling that is rather large from Ecuagenera US and it has grown a new leaf and doesn’t seem to be as fussy as I thought it might be. So it at least is a twofold question.
