I will be interested to see the answer on this from the taxonomic horticulturati.  While not an aroid, I have a variegated sport from a Hibiscus hybrid (H. syriacus x H. paramutabilis, which already has the cultivar name ‘Lohengrin’.  It is a triploid and apparently infertile.  Do I get to give it a new cultivar name?  Apparently they seem to do this with hostas all the time.
