Re: Aroid-L Digest, Vol 207, Issue 21

I am inserting myself (again, sorry!) here to voice agreement, as I’ve noted before. I am active in both because I find value in both. I appreciate the scientific discussions here but also like that there is a place where I can post of photo of a plant for help with ID’ing it or other things without feeling like I am imposing on or annoying you. I am not a fan of Facebook or social media in general (I don’t have a single Facebook post to my account for example), but the access it provides to people who are more knowledgeable than I without interrupting important scientific discourse is valuable to me as a collector & a student of aroids. I have gotten loads of good advice on working with TC plants there, & have been able to help another member through her first time collecting pollen from one of her plants, for example.

If the IAS is wanting to draw in younger members to keep it going, the social media aspect is unavoidable. Just the same, I wouldn’t want what is happening there to interrupt the conversations I am following here that are educational to me.

I think my point is as Robert began—not to dismiss. There are people online who want to get to where you are. & if the millennials & Gen Z’ers are the future of the IAS, they will get to a point where their conversations are as fascinating as yours are. They are a product of their own culture & using the tools they like to use to get through their beginnings just as every expert has to begin somewhere with the tools available to them. The likelihood they will ever assimilate into a forum via a listserv like this is very slim. The greatest botanist or biologist, etc. of the future is likely lurking in social media somewhere! To find a bridge between the 2 would be great, so my add-on to Robert’s point is to those who are working on website updates: a members-only online forum, Reddit-style perhaps, would be very cool I think, if that’s not already a part of the plan.

A central place where conversations are organized by topic would be a great solution. Newbies could eavesdrop on the types of conversations happening here but also allow them to rely on each other for help with the smaller things, & perhaps connect to experts who are willing to mentor or otherwise help with their advancement as some very kind folks on this list have offered to me. Build a bridge between the scientific & serious collector communities that allows younger/newer members to grow into new experts. No one would have to be mired in conversations that do not hold interest to them, but everyone would still be connected in a way that helps grow the organization & the interest in aroid science.

Just a new “kid’s” 2 cents!

As a representative of the millennial Aroider generation, I would urge the experts in the group to not fully discount all Facebook groups and other types of social media.

I know the noise there can often be hard to weed through, but there are hundreds of thousands of millenial and Gen Z aroiders around the world that are active mostly, if not only, on there. They range from complete beginners to those farther along on their journeys, and I know they could all use and welcome your expertise.

Some may be on here as well, but likely they, like me, found the format of the Aroid-L listserv a bit clunky to navigate (it took a bit to figure out how to even open attached photos, since they don't seem to be automatically shown in-line as more modern formats would have them do).

I know the IAS board is working on revamping the website. Perhaps with that, the Aroid-L listserv would be open to being at least upgraded to something that's more easily navigable/searched and utilized.

Best,
Robert

It would be great to have Lord P's input again.

That is a really cute species. Where is it from? How hard is it to grow?

Happy days,
Christopher
