Hi Clarence and interested parties!
You are confusing "atrox" meaning horrible, frightful, etc. (compare to
Crotalus atrox - the rattlesnake) with "ater" meaning black or dark.
Hence, combinations with purpureum would translate roughly as "dark
purple".
This combination is used in many botanical applications.
