garden pointers - recycling

Home Matters which is a show on the Discovery Channel (see
DiscoveryChannel.com) had the suggestion to use banana peels soaked in very
hot water for two weeks in a covered glass jar.  The resulting liquid is
used to spray flowers (well cleaned Windex bottles).  I would guess that it
is potassium rich and helps the flowers bloom.  Maybe if you chopped the
banana peels in a blender it would result in more chemical release faster?
