Weeds, weeds, weeds. The easiest way to deal with weeds that I've
found is to use a dutch hoe. These look like saddle stirrups and are
sharp on the edge. Get the weeds before they go to seed. The hoe goes
about 1/2 inch under the soil and cuts the weed at the hypocotyl where
the root makes its transition to stem. If there are no seeds leave it on
the ground. It will brown up in a few days or the worms will come up
and drag it down. If the weed is perennial the root will put up another
shoot, in about a week and 1/2 do it again. Eventually the root will
use up all of its resources and die. This is a really quick way to get
rid of weeds, but you've got to do it about 3 times. You can't just do it
once. Dutch people use this method in tulip fields where they don't
want to disturb the bulbs. You have to get the weeds before they go to
seed. You might point out the flowers on a lot of weeds, because many of
them don't have showy flowers and people don't realize that they are
flowering. Karen
