Community Gardener
Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance
The Garfield Park Conservatory is a horticultural landmark in the Chicago
area. The Conservatory, built in 1907, is one of the largest in the
world. The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance, formed in 1995, is a
public/private partnership with the Chicago Park District working to
revitalize the Conservatory by creating broad, community-linked programs
and events.
The position in the Horticulture Programs area involves assisting the
Director of Community Relations and Coordinator of Horticulture Programs on
community garden and an open space project development in the Garfield Park
neighborhoods. Work includes assisting with the implementation and
development of an outdoor demonstration garden on Conservatory
grounds. Duties include coordination of community groups with their garden
development, providing technical assistance in garden design, planting and
resource referral, teaching some basic horticulture classes, demonstration
garden planting and maintenance, some greenhouse growing, and other duties
as may be assigned. The position is full time through June 2000, Monday
through Friday, beginning January 2000. Some weekends and weeknights
required. A review of the position status will take place in June 2000.
Interested applicants should have:
 A thorough, working knowledge of plants (trees, shrubs, perennials)
 Experience with garden design, landscape installation and maintenance
 A proven ability to teach basic horticulture knowledge
 Experience working with groups in informal educational settings
 Ability to lead groups in cooperative work
 Experience with growing plants in greenhouse
