Lisa,
I'm not familiar with the root weevils involved with rhododendrons but, in
general, a good compost, mulch/organic matter  program is  an effective
strategy for root pests. Beneficial nematodes are part of the result.  The
more bio-diversity you have in your soil the more natural controls you have.
